Sealed vs. Vented
Back to Tutorials
The best way to
choose which enclosure is right for you is to understand the
difference between them. Sealed and vented boxes are the most
common, and will be the only two covered in this tutorial.
A sealed enclosure
is one that is air tight, with no leaks or openings. Between the
two, the sealed box is smaller in size, and can fit into tighter
spaces. These boxes can handle more power, and generally provide
better sound quality.
Vented, also known
as ported, enclosures have an opening in the box. This design is
more efficient, usually yielding 3dB more than sealed. They have
good upper and lower bass frequencies, and can cool the magnet
structure because of air circulation. Despite the advantages, this
design is larger, requiring more space.
